Salon Project

  1. Salon Name:

I’ve decided to name my salon Rosemary Beauty. I chose the name after my grandmother Rosemary Hanes. She was the epitamy of beauty. Her hair, makeup and nails were always done, and I would love to make a business in honour of her. The name itself sounds very feminine and elegant, and sends the right message that it would be a place for all your beauty needs.

  1. Location

I would love to have a spot on Academy. The reason I would choose this area are the many advantages that come with this location. It is central in the city, parking will be easy to find, the community around the salon all have a moderate to high income, and there are a variety of young and more mature clients. Not only that but it is a very trendy area. The only disadvantage of this location would be local competition as there are many different salons on Academy, although mine would offer fair prices, and more luxury services that other salons can’t. I envision my salon being in a trendy area, but still has a classic feel to it, and I feel that academy would be perfect for that.

  1. Clientele

I really don’t want to limit my clientele to one general type. I want my clientele to be able to be all ages, genders, and styles, but really leave feeling satisfied. I have always had a dream of having a warm environment where people will feel warmed and welcomed as soon as they walk through the front door. Coming from a background of being gay, I have faced discrimination and judgement. Ideally I would love to have a client who would have an edgier look as that would be the style of the salon and the products I would be carrying in the store. Also someone who is into makeup and accessories, as those would be things that would also be sold at the salon. I would like to ideally be able to take any client possible, and have staff hired to really give the best service to any ideal clientele looking for fantastic services.

  1. Hours

Monday: Closed
Tuesday: 10am - 10pm
Wednesday: 10am - 10pm
Thursday: 10am - 10pm
Friday: 10am - 10pm
Saturday: 8am - 8pm
Sunday: 10am - 6pm

I chose these hours based on capitalizing where other salons aren’t open. I chose mostly to be open on Sunday’s because I find that its rare for a salon to be open on Sundays. Usually people use that day as  a day to relax, spend time with family or do chores, but for some people, including myself, or young professionals who don’t have time during the week or on Saturday to get their hair done, its a great day to capitalize on clientele and income for the salon. I chose to be closed on Mondays because it tends to not be a very busy day for taking clients, and I feel like it would hurt my business. I chose to be open for 12 hours Tuesday - Saturday as it gives a lot of availability to take clients, as well gives a flexible schedule for my employees to work around their personal lives and schedules. It also gives students who are looking to apprentice a chance to be able to work decent hours and times, and learn the skills they need to. The only disadvantage I see is being open on a Sunday may not sit well with employees, but being open six days gives them a chance t have every second Sunday off, rotating with other staff, and being able to accommodate their clientele.

  1. Staff

Senior Stylist: 7
Junior Stylist: 4
Receptionist: 3-4
Makeup Artis/Brow Artist: 2

I really would like a team that is not only the best at their skill, but also a genuine, warm person who really loves what they do and have a passion for what they love. I do also want my salon to be the best place for makeup artistry, and brow specializing, to really take the hair service to the next level and ad extra services for the salon, to bring in more revenue and give the client a special service they can’t achieve anywhere else. My employees themselves have to have a  professional attitude, passion, be respectful and kind, and most of all have the skills they need to give their clients the best service as possible. I chose 7 senior stylist so that way the shifts could be rotated fairly and properly so the staff wouldn’t be working long hours and always weekends, if they needed time off. I chose four junior stylists so there would be enough so assist the senior stylist, but not over crowd the salon. I chose the number of receptionist again to be able to give great service for clients as they are the first people clients will see, and talk to, and I want enough so that way we can greet every client on time and properly, and set a great first example. I would love to have a retail section of great makeup brands, as well as a brow bar, which is why i chose 2 staff, to work more so evenings and weekends, to give great service and add additional add on services to our clients, to complete they’re whole desired look.

  1. Services

-Haircuts
-Blowouts
-Up-do and Styling
-Hair Colour (Root and Full)
-Highlights
-Makeup Application
-Facial
-Eyebrow Grooming

I chose general services that would give me a wide range to appeal to a wide clientele. I chose the basic hair services that we have been trained on, that speaks to almost everyone. I also added in extensions as a service because it is something that is more mainstream as well as something I would like to capitalize on. I’ve also added in extra services. I wanted to provide a facial area. Its a great service to add on while the clients colour is processing, but also just if a client wants to have a simple service that will make them feel like a million bucks. I am a huge supporter of great skin care and taking care of it, and its something that can work so well with a hair salon, that is not promoted and can easily make the experience so much better. The facials would only take ten minutes and be fairly simple, but give their skin the extra boost they need to feel hydrated, smooth and great. Another service is a full makeup service. I find a lot of salons not only career low quality makeup brands, but they don’t have trained staff that can provide a solid makeover that the client is wanting, and/or looking for. Makeup has been my number one passion and love in life, and something that I really want to bring into my salon, and give my salon and edge above others. Lastly, eyebrows are always something that can make someone feel amazing with great services. I wanted to make a brow bar that would offer threading, waxing, and blading services to give their clients perfect eyebrows, and really complete the look of their finished service. With all these services, its really a one stop shop to make someone not only change up their look, but feel incredible about their transformation.

  1. Price List

Haircuts: $30.00
Blowouts: $25.00
Up-dos: $60.00
Partial Highlights: $60.00
Full Highlights: $100.00
Tone: $25.00
Root Touch Up Colour Application: $40.00
Full Head Colour Application: $75.00
Full Makeup Application: $75.00
Makeup Lesson (1 Hour): $100.00
Facial: $50.00
Brow Grooming: $25.00

I picked these prices for my services because I wanted to offer a pricing that was not only affordable, but gave the image that you would be getting a great quality service, vs charging low per service and giving the essence that the cheap price point would be a botched service. I also wanted price that would help my employees make a decent wage as well too, so that way my employees and customers were both satisfied with the price points.

  1. Decor

FLOOR PLAN OF HAIR SALON AREA AND SINKS:

I wanted to keep the area of hair cutting and colour fairly simple with just six stations. I wanted the look of the stations to have a victorian/girly feel, mixing a bit of my Grandmothers taste as well as mine together. The colour pink is from her favourite colour, and the black victorian furniture is from my own personal taste. I wanted the sink area to be separated from the rest of the salon because it should be a quite, relaxing time, and I wanted to give more of a relaxed ambiance for my clients to really relax and enjoy.

LOBBY:

I wanted the lobby to be simple but chic. I chose to colours black and grey, with hard wood floors to keep a neutral tone to the salon, with hints of pink through out the place. I would love to have ROSEMARY in a pink LED light across the desk, to really have the logo stick out. I also want to have pictures of my grandmother scattered through out the salon as another tribute towards her, as this would her place as much as mine.

MAKEUP AREA:

The makeup area would be set up to the right of the check in desk. There we would offer our facial services, brow grooming services, makeup services, and makeup retail. Again keeping the furniture cohesive with the rest of the salon, I want the area to be neutral so that the products and colours would again pop nicely and really draw attention to the station and get people excited

WAITING AREA:

The waiting area again would be fairly simple, with pink couches and black victorian. style tables. Instead of magazines, I would have laid out different coffee table books that inspire me personal and that would inspire my grandmother, including celebrity, fashion, makeup, and hair coffee table books. It also gives a chance for clients to be       inspired and get some different ideas for their looks or ideas of what kind of services they would like.
